Trivium: Ascendancy
Reviewed by: Bill Steinbacher

Trivium. Here is another band to add to your growing list of groups joining the "American Metal" scene. There are too many bands out there trying to jump on this bandwagon due to the success that bands paving the way have been experiencing. The problem with this is that too many of these bands flat out suck, and are just trying to follow the growing trend for success. Trivium eats these bands for breakfast and shits early Metallica albums out before lunch. They have done their homework and made sure to dot all their I's and cross all their T's. This 4 piece band from Orlando FL is set to release their sophomore album on Roadrunner Records May 15th. "Ascendancy" has the formula to be a classic in many metal fans collections. With the guitars ranging from fast and crunchy late 80's/early 90's era thrash metal, to beautiful melodic solos like Iron Maiden, and slower intertwining guitar harmonies. The drums are simply earth shattering, and unlike a lot of bands, the double bass is not over-done. Some drummers learn how to use their fancy new double bass pedal and we are forced to listen to album that is a full out double bass barrage and nothing else. Travis Smith has balanced his drumming to perfection, and at times is very technical. Although Matt Heafy does not yet have the vocal range of Howard Jones from Killswitch Engage or someone of that caliber, he knows his limits and does not try to force notes that he cannot hit, and at only 18 years old you can expect his range to grow a lot in the up coming years.
