The Music: Welcome to the North
Reviewed by: Avery Salamon

Any band that calls themselves “The Music” has a lot to live up to. Their first album, which was self-titled didn’t really help that cause. Now they return with their sophomore effort, which is sure not to put them in the sophomore slump. Welcome to the North is a welcome change and a good start for these Brits.

They rely on a mix between Jane’s Addiction and a classic rock sound. This bodes well for them. The first track, which is of the same name as the album title, has the feel of early Jane’s. That song is a real standout on the CD and a good way to kick it off. Freedom Fighters is another great track on this record.

Although they have gotten tighter and more mature some songs like bleed from within and breakin’ still fall back into old ways. What they did do is step up and add two ballads to this record (Fight the feeling and Open Your Mind). That was gutsy and it proves that they have what it takes to go further.

Overall this album is a tight cohesive record. The weak tracks are so far and few between to make them even sound good. If you like Jane’s Addiction, classic rock or even Incubus (whom they are touring with) this album is for you. This is an adventurous journey into the minds of The Music and being that way is making it a grand step up for this young band.
