Interview with Trevor of Unearth

Interviewed by Bill Klopfer

Bill: Hey! My name’s Bill. How are you doing?
Trevor: Good, nice to meet you.

Bill: How’s the tour going?
Trevor: Excellent. Every night is either sold out or completely packed…I think every night has been sold out, at least to the best of my knowledge.
Bill: Sounds like things are going pretty good then!
Trevor: Yeah, it’s amazing.

Bill: What bands influenced you growing up?
Trevor: It started with rock-n-roll from my father. He’d always spin his records, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Hendrix, Zeppelin– stuff like that…Creedence. I grew up with stuff like that. By the time I hit 5th grade I heard Anthrax then on to Metallica to Megadeth and then Testament, Pantera, Deicide, Obituary. Then when I was about 15 I heard some hardcore like Earth Crisis.

Bill: How did you guys get signed?
Trevor: We’ve been on a couple different labels. When we first started we made a demo tape that came out in December 1998 and a label out of Connecticut called Endless Fight Records – I think they’re out of New London. It was called Above the Fall of Man. That was the first label; then about a year later we got signed by Eulogy Records. We had a CD called The Stings of Conscience. Then we had the Endless EP in 2001. Then about a year and a half ago we signed to Metal Blade.

Bill: How was the recording process for this CD? I heard Adam did it, right?
Trevor: Adam did the record. We’ve been working with him for a long time and this time we actually had more time, before we were kind of rushed to get in the studio, do our stuff and get out. So we didn’t get to do our performances as well as we wished. This time, we had a full month in the studio so we go to do take after take. Which is great and it worked out. We all performed very well and we got to use the best takes, but we were also pushed really hard.
Bill: When you were doing vocal tracks, was he like ‘do it again’?
Trevor: Yeah. I actually got a throat infection for the first few days because I was just singing so hard and had so many takes that I actually got something in my throat and it blew up and I got this really bad infection.
Bill: I’ve had that happen to me once before. I used to smoke cigarettes back then, but I don’t smoke anymore. I can drink beer, that’s about it.
Trevor: I drink beer and whisky. Actually, I think it helps. It gives me energy and it loosens me up so I don’t strain. I had to take over a week off and I knew that alcohol helps me relax, I tried going into the studio and it just hurt so I went out and get this beer right here.
Bill: I’ve never tried Killians.
Trevor: It’s the best beer in the world. I tracked 5 or 6 days and I drink probably 80 bottles of beer and that’s it.

Bill: What do you like and dislike about your past albums. Do you ever look back and feel like you could have done anything different?
Trevor: Yeah. Actually, Metal Blade is putting out our new record again with two bonus tracks. We actually got to re-record two old songs. One song is called “Charm”, it was on the Endless EP, and we were rushed, that was the last track I recorded, and I didn’t get to perform vocally how I wanted. So, that is one song I’ve always wished we could redo. Although I still like the track on the Endless EP it’ll be on this new record Oncoming Storm and I got to perform it the way I wanted to.

Bill: So, what mad you call this album Oncoming Storm?
Trevor: Pretty much just the way society is right now, everything from politics to natural disasters. Everything is coming to a head.

Bill: What do you like and dislike about touring?
Trevor: I like meeting people. I like playing shows where people give a fuck about our music. Dislikes…um…being away from friends and family but that comes with the lifestyle. If you can’t handle it, don’t do it.

Bill: That’s pretty much it.
Trevor: Cool.
Bill: Thanks for taking the time.
Trevor: Thanks
