Interview with Brent of The Agony Scene
March 18, 2005
Interviewed by Justin Bielawa

Justin: Hi, Brent. This is Justin with Beyond Reflection.
Brent: Hey! How’s it going?
Justin: Good. How are you?
Brent: I’m good man.

Justin: OK. Right up front, how have things been going with you?
Brent: Everything is going well. Right now we’re driving from Houston, TX to Dallas. The tour is going well. We’re having fun because we are in warmer weather now, of course. So, this is definitely a treat for us to be in this warm weather. That’s pretty much all we’ve been talking about. The tours been going good and stuff. Everyone’s having fun.
Justin: Great!
Justin: When did you start playing drums?
Brent: I started playing drums probably when I was about 10 years old – when I started playing actual drum sets. I think my dad bought me a snare drum on my 8th or 9th birthday. Probably about 9/10 years I’ve been playing now.

Justin: What bands influenced you growing up?
Brent: Nobody really. Ya know what – a lot of the reason I started playing drums was because my mom had this book The Little Drummer Boy and I thought it was the most awesome book ever since I was a really little kid. It was a cool book. And, my cousin – actually a lot of the people on my mom’s side of the family played the drums and stuff like that. My cousin is actually the drummer for a band called the Dresden Dolls, I don’t know if you’ve heard of them. Anyways, my cousin has been drumming since I was a little kid also so I took a lot of influence from him. He was a drummer and I thought it was cool because he was my cousin and he was older than me; I looked up to him. I didn’t really have any band influences when I was younger though.

Justin: Well, do you have any favorite bands out now?
Brent: Yeah I do. I’m trying to think of the ones I’ve been listening to recently…There’s a new Extol record coming out on Century Media this year. I got a pre-release of it when we stopped by the Century office to say hi to our old A&R. It’s amazing. I love it.
Justin: Oh, great. I’ll have to take a look for that.
Brent: You definitely should because I think you’d like it if you can recognize musical talent.

Justin: How did you get signed?
Brent: To Roadrunner?
Justin: Yeah.
Brent: What happened was we took a little break last year. The album before this – the one coming out on the 24th – the self titled was already out and had been floating around and Mike Gitter from Roadrunner got a hold of the CD and couple other people at the label were familiar with it at which point in time they got in contact with Mike, our singer and kind of worked everything out from there. They were definitely working with us in a really down to earth way. They actually flew Mike Gitter out and he came and talked to us; we were impressed by what he was saying and his attitude.

Justin: What is the most meaningful song that came out of The Darkest Red?
Brent: As far as lyric wise, I don’t know since I didn’t actually write any of them. Haha. I am a huge fan of Mike’s lyrics but I can’t really say what one is most meaningful.

Justin: What is your favorite song to play live?
Brent: All the new stuff is all equally as fun for me to play live. I actually enjoy playing the old stuff again too, but all the new stuff - there really isn’t one in particular I like playing more than another – I love playing the new stuff. I think this record is going to do pretty well because I think we are really into the music. We worked really hard in writing music that we liked. I like playing all of it. It’s kind of a vague answer, but it’s the truth.

Justin: What is the first thing you do when you come home from touring?
Brent: The first thing I do when I come home from touring – oh god! Take a shower! Do laundry. Go out to eat as many times as I possibly can. I like to overstock my brain with video games…umm…I have to have my few days of doing whatever I want and then try and get myself back on track as far as working, playing drums. Pretty much hanging out with the buds.

Justin: If you could cover any song – what would it be & why?
Brent: Well, we already did The Rolling Stone thing.
Justin: Yup.
Brent: We actually have a Misfits cover coming out.
Justin: Oh really?
Brent: Yeah. We actually recorded as a b side for the new album.
Justin: Can you say what song?
Brent: No, I can’t because it’s going to be a surprise and you’re going to like it. I promise you’re going to like it. I’m trying to think of what I’d want to cover…something like The Doors or Michael Jackson but that would never work so it doesn’t really matter!

Justin: Well, thank you very much for you’re time. Is there anything you'd like to end with?
Brent: That’s pretty much all I have as far as right now. Thanks for being cool and talking to me man.
Justin: Absolutely! Good luck.
Brent: Thanks man.
