Interview with Evan of Still Remains
March 10, 2005
Interviewed by Bill Klopfer

Bill: Hello. Is this Evan?
Evan: Yup, this is Evan.
Bill: This is Bill from Beyond Reflection.
Evan: You’re going to interview me right now?
Bill: Yeah, did you know about it?
Evan: Umm…I wasn’t expecting one until later on this afternoon but let me just switch drivers so I’m not behind the wheel. It’s fine though.
Bill: Oh ok…I’m sorry about that.
Evan: No, it’s really OK.
Evan: Alright. We’re just parked in a bit. I’m going to help him get some clearance so we can get out.
Bill: Ok. Cool.

Evan: Ok. How’s it going today?
Bill: It’s going really good. I’ve just got a couple questions for you. How’s the tour going?
Evan: Oh really good.

Bill: Ok, that’s cool. What bands influenced you growing up?
Evan: Growing up…I would say bands like The Cars umm…Motley Crue, then there was two years where all I listened to was Metallica and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Um…Faith No More…Deftones definitely were one that really kicked it into gear for me to say ‘get in a band’.

Bill: What are some of your favorite bands now?
Evan: Um…right now I’m really into The Killers – just off the top of my head. Let me see…I’m definitely becoming a huge fan of The Agony Scene on this tour. Umm…let me take a quick look. I like bands like The Bronx. I’m just at a complete loss. The Faints – I really like The Faints. God Forbid definitely.

Bill: As a bassist what was your favorite bass player growing up? Anyone in particular?
Evan: Of course there was always Flea, but I think growing up I was always more into guitar players. That was one of the things that first got me into music. It was listening to guitar. I guess as a bass player it still helps me feel more like my place is not necessarily to stand out it’s to be more of the backbone and the unseen link between melody and the rhythm.

Bill: So, you’ve go a new album out…by the way it kicks ass
Evan: Thank you.
Bill: What is the most meaningful song to come off this album?
Evan: I really like the song “In Place of Hope”, the third track on the record. It’s one of the last songs we wrote. I think it gives us a possible route to where we may be heading. I think we’ve always…well since we’ve had keyboards in the mix it’s always been kind of almost like an 80’s pop style textures along with metal and I think that song in particular really captures that. I think some of the stuff we do in the song; the break downs are not so simply open riffs.
Bill: Kind of like a lot of stuff coming out today.
Evan: Yeah, which is good stuff. We even do some of that ourselves but I just think the fact that it is a little different…it’s a pretty epic song to me.

Bill: What do you like and dislike about touring?
Evan: We love being on the road, we love being crammed into a van, hanging out with each other – we are all real tight. Going city to city and meeting people…making new friends. A lot of what we do is just socializing and trying to meet as many people as possible. I don’t know if there is much to dislike…we are all pretty strong rooted with our families and we have a lot of people that we love back at home. I’m married. That’s probably the only thing – there are so many people that you’re close to that you don’t get to make plans with.

Bill: Other than music what else do you do?
Evan: Well I work in sales at home. I just like to talk to people and sell cameras.
Bill: So, when you’re out on the road do you have to work other jobs to survive?
Evan: At this point most of us have jobs after we recorded. We’re not really making income at this point, but once we have the record and start touring and building up funds…having some money would be nice. Right now we’re just trying to build from the ground up. It’s kind of like we are the owners of this business and if we can’t support the business then we have no way to draw money anyway so we can either take it now or have the possibility of making more later. You’ve got to be broke. We’re living on $5.00 a day for our food. Most of the venues end up buying or catering of some sort but it doesn’t always happen so you just learn to eat little and dollar menus rule.

Bill: Well, that’s all I have right now and I wish you guys good luck on the tour.
Evan: Alright!
Bill: Take it easy.
Evan: Thank you.
