Interview with Mike of Spineshank
September 6, 2003
Interviewed by Bill Steinbacher

Bill: How long have you guys been together as a band and how did the band get started?
Mike: Uhh..we’ve been together as Spineshank since ’96. And just started, ya know we’ve all been in bands together before and so we just kind of put it together and boo-yaa; that was it.

Bill: When did you start playing guitar?
Mike: When I was like ten, maybe before that.

Bill: What bands or musicians inspired you?
Mike: Randy Rhodes! Totally Randy Rhodes. If I had to name one person it’d be him.

Bill: Alright, say you’ve got a five disc changer on the bus here and I went to go look in it and it’s all your CDs which albums would I find?
Mike: Why don’t I show you my CD book and you can tell me? There you go.
Bill: I’m going to go with the ones I like a lot.
Mike: OK
Bill: Lets see…Hatebreed, Mudvayne…
Mike: Sure
Bill: Soulfly…
Mike: Maiden…
Bill: Oh definitely Maiden. That’s four…I need one more, West Side Connection!
Mike: Ya gotta go with that! Ya gotta have that.
Bill: I didn’t get far into the book; that was quick.
Mike: So there ya go; you just picked ‘em.

Bill: What are your feelings about the general state of Rock Music?
Mike: Well…there are so many different bands doing so many different things. I mean, ya know it depends on what you consider Rock Music.
Bill: Alright lets say what nu metal was and what it’s become. What do you think about bands trying getting a lot heavier?
Mike: Yeah, I don’t even know what nu metal is. I never really did to tell you the truth. I don’t really know what it means. I guess you could generalize a bunch of shit that came out after ’98 and that could be nu metal. Ya know…um… I have no idea…If Limp Bizkit is nu metal and System of a Down is nu metal, then I have no idea.
Bill: That’s like two opposite ends of the spectrum.
Mike: Yeah, ya know. I mean there are definitely a lot of good bands out there. For every one good band, there’s about 10 shitty bands. It doesn’t really mean much to me. I know the bands I like and I think are good and that’s all that matters to me.

Bill: What are your favourite and least favourite aspects of touring?
Mike: Playing shows would be the favourite. Getting sick on tour would be the least favourite. Cause it sucks.

Bill: Well, that’s all the questions I had.
Mike: Alright. Nice.

Bill: Thanks. I hope the show goes well tonight.
Mike: Thanks.
