Interview with Bjorn of Soilwork
October 7, 2006
Interviewed by Steffen Vitale

Steffen: You guys have done tons of tours. Do you have any interesting stories?
Bjorn: There’s been a lot of them. Usually a lot of nudity going on. That’s a very Scandinavian thing. I usually don’t get naked myself, but there’s a couple people in the Soilwork that like to get naked and I remember this time as well, which is quite funny. We played in Seattle, I think, and after the show we got really drunk and everything was closed and we wanted to get food so desperately so we stopped by McDonalds and only the drive through was open. We really couldn’t fit the bus in there so we decided to just go over there and knock and say is it ok if we order because our bus is over there and wouldn’t fit. The guy was saying “No no no. Sorry Sir, we can’t do that.” Ola just suddenly flips out, “Give us our burgers. We can’t drive the fucking bus in there. We want the burgers and we want them now.” He flipped out and the cops came. I never saw him flip out like that. That’s one thing that really sticks in my mind.

Steffen: I know you go on all these long tours so what do you do to keep from being insanely bored?
Bjorn: Well, if we’re in the middle of nowhere there isn’t much to do, but when you’re in the city you want to check it out. We write a lot of music and we bring our computers to find a way to keep ourselves busy. I usually work out a little bit as well to stay in shape. Get so tired just drinking beers and being on stage.

Steffen: All the tours that you’ve done is there a favourite that sticks out to you?
Bjorn: The first time we went to Japan was really special and also when we went to Australia. Australia was really cool because the crowd was like a mix of everything in one.

Steffen: I’ve seen you at Ozzfest in Hartford and then tonight in a smaller venue like this. Which do you prefer?
Bjorn: I like both, ya know. It’s one thing playing a small club…it’s a lot more intimate but sometimes it tends to be so fucking hot and you can’t stand it. But I like festivals as well, the open air ones where you can see a lot of people.

Steffen: What do you think about the general state of heavy metal today?
Bjorn: I’m a big fan of Killswitch Engage. I think they have something most Soilworks don’t have. They know how to write actual songs in right time with music because that’s what it’s all about. That has to be my favourite Soilwork in that genre. It will survive all the trends.

Steffen: I know you guys are big drinkers, is there a specific kind of poison that you enjoy?
Bjorn: I’ve been sticking with Jim for a couple of years now. What else…I really like drinking White Russians with half & half. Bjorn than that…for beer…New Castle. I’m not a big fan of Coors Light.

Steffen: Thank you very much man.
Bjorn: Thanks.
