Interview with Chris Slack of Slack

Interviewed by Michelle Wallenstein

Michelle: How is your tour going so far?
Chris: We just finished our fall tour, Oct to end of Nov, and it went really well- every single town we went to, at the very least a couple people were really excited about us, which was great. Basically some shows were insane, and some were kind of slow, but it was much better than I hoped- I have a renewed faith in rock and roll, or something. Plus we got to do a bunch of dates with another great band from Nashville called the Pink Spiders.

Michelle: Where has been your favorite place to play, and why?
Chris: We really liked playing Knoxville- everybody there likes straight rock and I think they got our onstage jokes. Other good towns were Orlando, Austin, Brunswick, Dayton and Baton Rouge, for mostly the same reasons.

Michelle: What do you like most about touring?
Chris: Really the best part is playing, I mean you can do that in your garage but it's always good playing for different people every night and trying to win them over. That and the challenge of keeping your jeans smelling fresh.

Michelle: How did Ben Slack's accident affect the band?
Chris: Well, the deal with our bass player Ben, was he fell off a ladder right before tour, and had broken both his heels, and couldn't walk for 3 months- and we had 2 months of booked shows. We ended up getting a friend of a friend, Bobby (formerly of Cruiserweight) to come up a weekbefore we left on a Greyhound and learn the songs and hit the road. It worked out and we were still able to tour of course, but we really missed Ben and his absolutely legendary sense of humor- I talked to him a lot on the phone when we were out, and he was definitely around in spirit, especially when we made fun of people in the van.

Michelle: In what genre do you label yourselves?
Chris: Pop/rock, indie rock or something like that. But I guess that's kind of boring- oh I don't know, how about "awesome rock"?

Michelle: Where do you see yourselves in a couple of years?
Chris: Celebrating the 2 year anniversary of you asking this question. Ha, no seriously we'll probably be pretty famous by then.

Michelle: Who... or What, are your biggest influences?
Chris: Well, we all like a really broad mix of bands, really old to really new, and we all like things that are really funny and weird, books, movies, tv and otherwise. I know Ben is really into horror movies and Nick really likes Queen. For me personally my favorite records are the Beatles first album, Louis Armstrong's "Snake Rag" record, all the Superdrag records, all the Verbena records, and a lot of friend's bands like Feable Weiner, Pink Spiders and the Features, and I love Superchunk. The list is really endless. And we all like to settle in with some Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Michelle: What's everybody's favorite color?? :)
Chris: The other guy's aren't around, so I can only answer. Green.

Michelle: What does the song "My knife is on it's way" mean to you?
Chris: Without getting too deep or silly, it's basically a comeback song, kind of a f-u to people that have given us trouble in the past- but I wrote it to where the line "my knife is on its way" could either mean whatever it is that's going to stab me in the back,or the backup that's going to help me out. I usually try to make songs that are really simple but could mean a couple different things. Like the basic music & melody itself kind of sounds lovey or Jimmie Buffet or something but I wanted to kind of write words that were the opposite, which was how I was feeling at the time. Now that I think about it I actually wrote that song in an hour on my lunch break when I used to have a job.

Michelle: How did it feel to win the NSMA for being best punk band?
Chris: Oh, it was cool to feel like you're appreciated or noticed, but I don't think music should be a competition, like the Grammy's or whatever- I've definitely never liked watching music awards shows. Whatever, we did win and I guess it was kind of awesome.
