Interview with Jon of One Day Old
November 19, 2004
Interviewed by Michelle Wallenstein

Michelle: How is the tour going so far?
Jon: Touring is friggin sweet! Actually, right this instant, we're taking a small break from all of our shows right now to take a breather and write some new material. But we'll be back at it in a month or so and we're totally stoked about it!

Michelle: Have you encountered any problems on the road?
Jon: We haven't really encountered too many problems out on the road... except for the fact that we've almost totally beat the life out of our relatively new trailer. Poor thing. If it was a child, we'd be in jail right now.

Michelle: What made you guys choose "One Day Old"?
Jon: Everyone always asks that... standard band question, I guess. We always wish that we had a better story to back it up, but the truth of the matter is that before we really got started, we used to play parties and such acoustically. One time, when we had just written a new song the day before, we introduced it as being "one day old". Several drunk people came up afterwards and said that sounded like a cool band name. Why the drunks make all the decisions, I don't know, but it's stuck quite nicely.

Michelle: Who does most of the song writing in the group?
Jon: By this point, we all have equal roles to play in that department. One member usually starts off with some sort of vague idea of what the song should sound like in their head, and then we all take the time to hammer it out from there. That way, it has a tendency to come out in a way that makes us all happy. That sounded so dirty. hehehe.

Michelle: What does the song "Unfurled" mean to each of you?
Jon: Unfurled is a song about not getting quite what you expected, even when you put yourself out there for someone else. It's a song about falling short of where you thought you'd be. Also, I'd definitely say it's our deepest song on the EP.

Michelle: What musical influences are a big part of the band?
Jon: Individually, we all have rather different influences. Primarily rock bands (Blink 182, Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, and Matchbox Twenty to name a few), but I think it's that diversity that makes us sound unique. Everyone is coming from somewhere different, but we all end up at the same place.

Michelle: What, so far, have been the biggest challenges you've come to face?
Jon: The biggest challenge would probably just be getting the opportunity to get your band heard. There are so many bands out there right now and so many more forming as we speak that the competition is unreal. You've really got to stand out before anyone will even give you a chance to be heard.

Michelle: Which do you prefer: Mc Donald's fries, or burger kings?
Jon: McDonald's, hands down. Eating McDonald's is like getting hugged on the inside.

Michelle: What advice would you give to beginners trying to make it in the music industry?
Jon: From what we've learned so far, I'd definitely have to say that you absolutely have to want it more than anything else in the world. You can't just sort of think it'd be kinda cool if it maybe worked out one day, blah blah blah. Nope. You have to be able to have people tell you "you suck" right to your face and go on playing with a big smile in your face. That's right, kids, rock and roll isn't all fun and games. OK, I was lying. It's nothing but nonstop fun. OhK. and games. Lots of fun and games. Yup, that's it.

Michelle: What's your opinion on the recent election?
Jon: I don't really think it's our place to say anything about it. People voted, somebody won. He may be the person you wanted in office. He may not. It happens. Accept it. Move on.
